Recent Sketches

Trying a new skill

In the last few days I have been inspired by the work of other sketchers to try a new method of work. A few weeks ago my son, Matthew, brought me a wonderful book called The Art of Urban Sketching

with illustrations of the work of dozens of sketchers from all around the world, and subjects of many cities from different countries.

Some of them have experimented with putting areas of colour on their page first, and then adding the black lines later. So here are my efforts. I think I have improved as I have practised. See what you think!

I started with a photo from our 2008 trip to Europe. Here is my version of Paris, viewed from the steps at Montmartre leading up to the Sacre Coeur Church.

And my version of a 1978 photo from Chinatown in Singapore when Terry and I were exploring the city with Margaret on our way to Olwyn and Dinesh's wedding.

Then I started copying the work of other sketchers, this time a street scene from Lisbon by Richard Camara.

Then I found a historic photo from 1916 of the first day of the tram service in New Plymouth. Two years time and we'll have to be celebrating the centenary. Meantime it was a good picture to practise with. (Yes, I know I got the colour of the Model T wrong!)
