East Dulwich
On the third afternoon we were picked up outside
St Paul's Cathedral by Grant and Raymonde Smith; Grant is the son of Peter Smith, Margaret's colleague from Spotswood College, and our long-time friend. When they knew we were coming to London they said we were welcome to stay with them if we needed a 'bed' - they lived in East Dulwich at that time.
The next day, a Sunday, they took us to Greenwich, to see the Park, and the Observatory Building, which is now a museum, and in particular the Greenwich Meridian.
In the background you can see the buildings of the Isle of Dogs commercial district over the river to the north behind the Greenwich Maritime Museum. As you can see, the weather was perfect - four days in a row with blue skies, very little wind and not too hot.
Here we are at the meridian, Margaret to the west and me to the east. How many thousands of people have a similar photo taken at the exact spot!
After our busy sightseeing, our hosts took us down to the village of Greenwich to see a real London telephone box, and to have fish and chips (and mushy peas) in the village market.
This was all great fun and good company, although English fish and chips don't come up to our New Zealand standard!
