Raining first this morning and showery
all day. Lightning and Thunder in the evening, the rain
is very heavy.... Very close between decks but there is no compulsion to remain there. Several go on deck.
20th
Strong wind and squally all day, very
dull. Lat 3-5N. Heavy rain,
21st
Very fine
and hot, calm. Lat 3N. Sailing W.S.W. Mr Wilkes this
evening read a Lecture on Labour and Poverty,
very much admired.
22nd
Very fine and hot. Tacking about several times today in consequence
of the wind being ahead of us. Lat. 2-40N
Long 22W. Very rough and lightning and Thunder
all night.
23rd
Cleared off. My wife washed several things in the rain
water Caught in our Washing Tray in the
night, I hung them out on a piece of cord I tied to the rigging. Lat 2-10. Quite a washing day with most persons.
Shark 7-6
2 Skipjacks. 2 past 7 p.m. 2 barrels (lighted) with tar sent afloat
from off the bows of the ship, after a deal of shouting from
some of the sailors which was
answered by the 2nd Mate.
