Family History 2.02

Bigelow History: Pre-1630
Sunifred

Bello's son (or son-in-law), Sunifred, was Count of Cerdanya in 841 when the whole region was threatened by a Moorish army from Spain.

Sunifred's coat of arms

Sunifred led an army against the Moors, and prevented them from attacking through the mountains. He was rewarded by the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles the Bold, by being given a string of counties to control, including notably Barcelona.

Sunifred's domain stretched from south of Barcelona to
beyond Narbonne
These had been put together by a previous count, on both sides of the Pyrenees, largely to prevent the Moors attacking the south of France. This confederation of counties later did prove to be the only part of Spain that was not taken over by the Moors, before the regional leaders eventually slowly regained the whole peninsula, completing the task in the year Columbus sailed for America (1492) under King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
