Europe 2008 Part 20

Milano

We decided that rather than limiting our sightseeing to Genoa we would take the train to Milan for the day.

It is only an hour and a half between the two cities, and the trains run all the time.

So we returned to the railway and took off up into the hills and then along the plain to the bigger city.

Here we have just arrived at the main central station, built by Mussolini's regime early last century.

It has something of the pretentious, foreboding feeling that the fascist regimes have left us with from that period of history.

The plaza in front of the building is huge. Obviously Mussolini expected to be remembered! The photo shows only a fraction of the great open paved space.

Once we had got our immediate bearings we hopped on one of the obligatory tourist buses and proceeded to check out the city from the open top deck.

The commentary, in lots of languages, was excellent.

We stopped briefly to see the main opera house, La Scala, here on the left.

The cathedral is the starting and ending place for the bus tour, so we had to sit for a while watching the crowds while the minutes ticked over until the next tour began.

When we got round to our original starting place we felt like some exercise so walked several blocks to the next attraction, soaking up the atmosphere of Italy's No 2 city.
