Portofino
The next morning, after our usual enjoyable hostel breakfast, we wandered about the downtown part of the city near the station where we caught the train south along the main coastal line towards Pisa.
After 45 minutes or so we got off at this station, Santa Margherita Ligure, and caught the bus a bit later for the four-kilometre journey around the coast road to Portofino.
This is the main square in Portofino, where there was a wedding celebration going on, and loads of tourists.
We wandered about for a while, soaking up the holiday atmosphere, and bought the obligatory T-shirt at one of the quayside shops.
We sat in the sunshine on this bench to eat our lunch, and then strolled to the nearby wharf to catch the fast ferry back to Santa Margherita, to reconnect with the railway system.
This is the waterfront at Santa Margherita.
Near where I am admiring the bay is a statue of Columbus, who came from this part of the world.
Portofino, as its name implies, is at the seaward end of the peninsula to the north of this bay.
