This is the view over the roofs of Paris from our eighth floor window at the hostel:
The next morning we headed for the centre of the city and soon found ourselves strolling along the Champs Elysee, heading in the direction of the Arc de Triomphe - both compulsory tourist spots for a first visit.
At the Arc de Triomphe we climbed the spiral staircase, saw the exhibition, and eventually reached the top.
The view blew us away as you can see from the photos below. Paris is such a simple city to get the hang of, partly because you can get above it like this and see everything from above.
And the height limits and the straight avenues make finding one's way around easy, compared to a jumble like London.
The top of the Arc is not as high as the Tour Eiffel, or St Paul's or the London Eye, but because of its position it gives a better view of the city than any of those.
Here we are back on the ground.
You can see from the size of the people on the top of the Arc how huge it is and how high.
And you can see the relative heights in this shot of the Eiffel Tower from the Arc:
Looking west we can catch a good panorama of the business district with its modern buildings.
